Enhance Self-Actualisation

Self-actualisation is the pursuit of meaning – involving an ongoing, dynamic process of striving toward the maximum development of your abilities and talents, of persistently trying to do your best and to improve yourself in general.

Importance of Self-actualisation in the Workspace:
Self-actualised individuals tend to be well-rounded, knowledgeable, secure and balanced individuals. Usually, they have seen a lot, done a lot and know a lot and therefore can be of great value to teams and organisations. Self-actualised individuals know how to strike a balance in everything they do because they understand that life is a journey, not a destination. They tend to have a holistic and grounded view of the world, themselves and others, thereby adding tremendous value at a strategic level.

Guidelines for enhancing self- actualisation:

  • Set action goals for yourself.
Action oriented goals are focused on the journey rather than the destination. State your goals in specific manageable steps with positive rewards once each step has been completed. If you set goals based on a destination (ultimate end goal) you may be at risk of setting yourself up for failure because they appear to be too far away to reach.
Try using this formula: Step1- action-reward. Step2-action-reward. Repeat until you have reached your desired long-term goal.
  • Find Balance. Too much of one thing is never a good thing. Make time to do the things you enjoy. Identify things that interest you, be it travel, food, reading, and pursue them with vigour and commitment. Your biggest success and satisfaction in your life can probably be traced back to when you were doing what you enjoy in both your personal and work life.
  • Explore and take risks. Always be open to learning something new. Talk to strangers, spend time on the internet, read books, travel if you can.

The most successful and happy people are those in tune with the things that excite them. Self- actualisation is an ongoing journey but all journeys start somewhere. Invest in yourself, you are worth it!
